Indonesian Girl
My experience of dating Indonesian girls is not as great as some long term expats. I only dated girls for three years, and 2 and 1/2 years of that was with the same girl. But I figure as I have now been married to that same girl for 7 years (and have a little half Indonesian girl of my own!) I should know a little about them.
I’m not the only person to have married an Indonesian girl - more than half of my Western colleagues ended up married to them. And while there are huge challenges in marrying across any culture, I think it says a lot that I know of no divorces amongst my former colleagues.
Culture
Indonesian is a vast country, and there are substantial differences in culture in different areas of the country. The very direct Bugis and Madurese are vastly different from the relatively subtle Javanese or Balinese. My wife's family, half Bugis and half Dayak, still compain that they never know what Javanese are thinking. They, on the other hand, always say exactly what they are thinking - no matter how insulting that may be!
